Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a liquid topical solution that is applied painlessly via a small brush directly onto the teeth. It is an antimicrobial application to help treat decay and prevent further deterioration. SDF is commonly used on children’s teeth because it is a non-invasive treatment, and quick to apply for our younger patients with squirmy tendencies.

While SDF is a great option to help stop the spread of decay, when SDF is applied to the tooth it oxidizes and leaves a black stain on the damaged portion of the tooth. While this may be a concern for parents, it should be noted that commonly the SDF is applied to baby teeth which eventually fall out and are replaced by healthy adult teeth – stain free.
